Garbage Disposal Not Working? Repair Steps for Corona Homeowners

Humming, jammed, or completely dead — what the symptom means and how to reset, free, or replace a disposal safely.

A garbage disposal that won't turn on, hums but doesn't grind, or leaks under the sink is one of the easiest residential repairs to misdiagnose. The symptom tells you exactly which fix is required — once you know how to read it.

Symptom 1: Completely dead, no sound. Press the red reset button on the bottom of the disposal. If it doesn't reset and stay in, the internal thermal overload has failed. Check the breaker. If both reset and breaker are fine, the switch under the sink (or the air switch on the counter) is the issue. Cost to replace switch: $120–$180.

Symptom 2: Humming but not spinning. The impeller plate is jammed. Kill power at the wall switch *and* the breaker. Insert a 1/4" hex wrench into the hex socket at the bottom center of the disposal and rotate back and forth until it spins freely. Remove any debris from inside with tongs — never your hand. Press reset. Power back on.

Symptom 3: Leaks at the top flange. The plumber's putty seal at the sink flange has failed. Drop the unit, scrape the old putty, reseal, and rehang. Easy if you've done it; awkward if you haven't.

Symptom 4: Leaks at the bottom. Internal seal is gone. Disposal is done — replace it.

Why Corona disposals fail early. Hard water deposits inside the grind chamber abrade the impellers and accelerate seal failure. A typical 1/2 HP big-box disposal lasts 6–9 years in Corona vs. 10–12 years in soft-water markets. If yours is in that range and acting up, replacement usually beats repair on cost.

Pricing. Flat-rate disposal replacement in Corona: $295–$450 for a name-brand 1/2 HP unit installed (typically InSinkErator Badge 5+); $395–$575 for 3/4 HP; $495–$695 for 1 HP. Includes haul-away of the old unit. Call (951) 582-2433 for same-day plumbing repair in Corona.
