Cartridge, washer, or O-ring? Diagnose the drip in your kitchen or bathroom faucet — and know when the repair is worth a service call.
A dripping faucet wastes more water than most Corona homeowners realize — a steady drip at one per second is about 3,000 gallons per year, and Corona's hard water means a leak you ignore today often turns into a stuck cartridge tomorrow. Here's how to diagnose it and decide whether it's a DIY fix or a service call.
Step 1: Identify the leak point. Water at the spout when handles are off = cartridge or seat failure. Water at the base of the handle = O-ring or stem seal. Water under the sink at the supply line = compression nut or supply hose. Each one is a different repair.
Step 2: Identify the brand. Moen, Delta, Kohler, Pfister, and Grohe each use a different cartridge. Look on the underside of the spout or behind the handle for the model number, or photograph the handle for us before the truck rolls.
Step 3: Shut off the angle stops. Both hot and cold, under the sink. Open the faucet to confirm zero flow before you take anything apart. If the angle stops won't fully close — common on 15+ year-old Corona homes — stop and call. Cracking a brittle stop turns a $200 repair into a $600 repair.
Step 4: The repair itself. A Moen 1225 cartridge swap on a kitchen faucet is a 25-minute job for a plumber with the part on the truck. The same job for a homeowner who has to make a hardware store run, source the right puller, and risk snapping the cartridge inside the body usually runs three hours and ends badly half the time.
When it's worth a service call. Pre-2005 faucet, hard-water scale visible at the spout, handle that won't pull off, or any sign of corrosion at the angle stop. Call (951) 582-2433 for plumbing repair in Corona — typical faucet cartridge repairs run $185–$320 flat-rate including the part.
